With both the Princess of Wales and the King going public, and one in three of us suffering, cancer awareness is high. Here at Wise Psychic Counselling, we thought we would share some coping strategies to help.

Learning that you have cancer is a difficult experience. After your cancer diagnosis, you may feel anxious, afraid, angry, or overwhelmed, and wonder how you can cope during the days ahead. This is normal and expected. Your diagnosis will likely be the focus of all your attention in the days and months to follow, and it will affect your daily routines and personal relationships.

While each person's situation is different, there are common ways to approach a cancer diagnosis that can lower anxiety and improve your resilience and coping skills.

Here are 11 suggestions:

  1. Get the facts about your cancer diagnosis: Knowledge is power. Gather as much information about your cancer diagnosis as you can to make informed decisions about your care. Ask questions about the type of cancer, its location, treatment options, and potential side effects.

  2. Keep the lines of communication open: Honest communication with loved ones and your healthcare team is crucial. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns openly, and encourage others to do the same. This can help alleviate feelings of isolation and provide much-needed support.

  3. Anticipate possible physical changes: Understand how your treatment may affect your body. Prepare for potential physical changes such as hair loss, fatigue, or changes in appetite. Seek advice from healthcare professionals and support groups on managing these changes.

  4. Let friends and family help you: Accept help from friends and family members who offer assistance with daily tasks, errands, or emotional support. Allowing others to help can ease the burden and strengthen relationships.

  5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Focus on maintaining a healthy diet, getting adequate rest, and engaging in physical activity as tolerated. A healthy lifestyle can improve energy levels, mood, and overall well-being during treatment.

  6. Review your goals and priorities: Reflect on what matters most to you and adjust your priorities accordingly. Take time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, and share your thoughts and feelings with loved ones.

  7. Try to maintain your normal lifestyle: While treatment may disrupt your routine, try to maintain a sense of normalcy where possible. Continue participating in activities you enjoy and seek support from friends and family to help you adapt to any changes.

  8. Consider how your diagnosis will affect your finances: Cancer treatment can come with unexpected financial burdens. Explore resources available to help cover treatment costs, and consider discussing financial concerns with your healthcare team.

  9. Talk to other people with cancer: Connect with other cancer survivors through support groups, online forums, or community organizations. Sharing experiences and insights with others who have been in similar situations can provide valuable support and encouragement.

  10. Fight stigmas: Address any stigmas or misconceptions surrounding cancer with open and honest communication. Educate others about your experience and advocate for understanding and acceptance.

  11. Develop your own coping strategy: Identify coping mechanisms that work best for you, whether it's practicing relaxation techniques, journaling, seeking spiritual support, or engaging in leisure activities. Experiment with different strategies and tailor them to meet your individual needs.

By incorporating these coping strategies into your cancer journey, you can enhance your resilience, improve your quality of life, and find strength and support during challenging times. Remember, you're not alone, and help is available every step of the way.
