Have you been kind this year? Kind to yourself and others? If so, I hope Santa brings you everything you desire. But if you feel there's room for improvement, let me share some suggestions—consider them my Christmas gift to you.

Kindness is often seen as being nice: friendly, generous, and considerate. While these traits are wonderful, kindness goes deeper. In our society, we frequently equate kindness with acts of service, such as helping someone in need, volunteering, or donating to charity. These acts are valuable, but creating meaningful change requires shifting from doing acts of kindness to being inherently kind—to ourselves and others.

Here are three daily practices to help you embody kindness, experience it more consistently, and let it transform your life.


3 Steps Towards Being Kinder to Ourselves and Humanity


1. Awareness: Harness the Power of Your Thoughts, Gestures, and Actions

It’s challenging to cultivate kind thoughts all the time. Our minds are busy, emotions fluctuate, and we often respond to stimuli impulsively. But taking time to reflect can help. Thoughts are energy; they shape our reality.

We are not kind when we:


  • Judge ourselves or others—even superficially.

  • Discriminate against others, consciously or unconsciously.

  • Act selfishly or put our interests above others.

  • Close our eyes to injustice.

  • Neglect the health of our planet.

  • Fail to show solidarity.


The first step toward lasting kindness is understanding how our minds work. Our thoughts shape our words and actions. True kindness begins with the bravery to change our mindset and contribute to a more positive reality. This self-awareness allows us to take responsibility for our thoughts, words, and gestures, and fosters growth in both heart and mind.


Importantly, be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your efforts and commit to doing better without harsh self-judgment. Cultivating kindness creates a better life for ourselves and a better world for humanity—a world of peace, mutual understanding, and solidarity. This vision begins with our decision to embody our kindest selves.


2. Forgiveness and Compassion: Let Go and Move Forward

Once we’re aware of our ability to cultivate kindness, the next step is learning to let go of unhelpful emotions. Forgiveness is the ultimate form of letting go. It starts with forgiving ourselves for our shortcomings and promising to improve.


Apply this principle to others as well. Many conflicts could disappear if we embraced forgiveness in all circumstances. Blame and judgment perpetuate negativity, keeping us trapped in cycles of conflict. Instead, forgiveness liberates us and others, empowering everyone to grow.


Compassion deepens this journey. By recognising the humanity in others, we accept that they, too, are doing their best. Compassion enables us to offer love, patience, and support. Stories of individuals forgiving those who’ve caused them pain reveal how deeply liberating this practice can be.


When we forgive, we embody humanity’s best qualities. Forgiveness and compassion are acts of kindness in motion.


3. Unity: Embrace Our Shared Humanity

Forgiveness and compassion lead to a profound truth: we are all one. When we forgive others, we forgive ourselves. When we show compassion, we honour our shared humanity.


We all experience the same emotions, challenges, and aspirations. Conflict often mirrors the inner struggles we carry. True kindness begins with recognising that separation is an illusion. Despite our individuality, we are deeply interconnected, sharing a common destiny.


This Christmas, give yourself the gift of kindness. Be kind to yourself, to those around you, and to humanity as a whole. Start by:


  • Paying attention to your thoughts, words, and actions.

  • Letting go of judgment.

  • Practising forgiveness.

  • Opening your heart to compassion—for yourself and others.


When we realise that everyone is doing their best based on their awareness, we see the futility of blame and division. Unity is our greatest strength; division, our most dangerous enemy.


Let us take a deep breath and embrace where we are. There’s much work to be done, but together, we can create a kinder world. After all, we are humanity.
