Sexual Desire as a Measure of Relationship Value

Sexual desire serves as a vital emotional compass in romantic relationships. It not only signals a partner’s value as a mate but also influences the level of investment we are willing to make to maintain the relationship.

Desire can deepen a bond with a cherished partner or, conversely, highlight emotional distance when the connection weakens. This dynamic naturally fluctuates over time, often shaped by how we perceive our partner’s long-term suitability. As such, sexual desire becomes a mechanism for reinforcing bonds with those we consider worth keeping close.
The Emotional Power of Sexual Desire
It’s widely acknowledged that sex plays a crucial role in romantic happiness. Beyond physical pleasure, it acts as an emotional glue that binds partners together. People often report having sex to strengthen their connection, express love, and affirm affection.
Even just fantasising about intimacy with one’s partner can lead to behaviours that reinforce the relationship—such as acts of kindness, verbal affirmations, or small sacrifices that communicate love and value.
Research Insights on Desire and Relationship Investment
However, desire often declines over time. When this happens, it may reflect deeper relationship issues. Recent research suggests that sexual desire operates as a psychological gauge—motivating us to invest more in relationships where we perceive high partner value and reducing investment when that value diminishes.
To explore this, five studies were conducted examining how desire affects behaviour in intimate relationships:
Studies 1 & 2: Participants recalled sexual or non-sexual experiences with their partners. Those who recalled sexual moments reported a higher inclination to do something kind for their partner and behaved more responsively during real-time conversations.
Study 3: When participants recalled moments where they highly valued their partner, their sexual desire increased. This led to greater willingness to sacrifice—such as giving up potential spa treatments for their partner.
Study 4: In a three-week daily diary study, couples recorded how desirable they found their partner, and whether their partner acted thoughtfully. Desire was strongly linked to perceiving the partner as a high-value mate, which in turn motivated positive behaviour.
Study 5: Over six months, couples reported levels of passion and sacrifice. Again, desire—driven by partner value—predicted meaningful sacrifices, such as putting aside personal interests for the sake of the relationship.
These findings suggest that sexual desire is more than a fleeting emotion—it plays a central role in determining how much we invest in our partners. By understanding how desire operates, couples can use it as a tool for nurturing emotional connection and ensuring that their relationships continue to thrive over time.
