Blue Monday: How to Beat the Most Depressing Day of the Year

Blue Monday—this year falling on Monday 16 January—is often labelled the most depressing day of the year. Why? A mix of dismal weather, Christmas debt, and failed New Year resolutions creates the perfect storm for low spirits.

After the festive season, many of us may feel a bit down. Christmas has passed, our bank accounts may be drained, credit card statements have arrived, and the sparkle of holiday decorations has faded. Payday seems far away, and with the days still short and grey, it’s easy to feel bleak.
But all is not lost! There are ways to shift your mindset and make Blue Monday brighter.
Tips to Overcome Blue Monday
1. Find Gratitude
Focus on small moments of joy. Start your day by listing five things you’re grateful for. These don’t need to be big things—perhaps the comfort of your slippers, the warmth of your coffee cup, or your pet’s nudge for attention.
When you focus on gratitude, the blue feelings begin to fade.
2. Practise Mindfulness
Spend time fully immersed in the present moment. Use your senses to anchor yourself:
What can you see, hear, or smell?
What textures are under your hands—are they rough or smooth?
Pause five times throughout the day to check in with your senses. This simple practice helps bring clarity and calm.
3. Get Moving
Exercise is a fantastic mood booster! Whether it’s a walk, run, swim, or dancing in your kitchen, moving your body releases endorphins that naturally uplift your mood.
Not into exercise? Try ending your morning shower with a burst of cold water—it’s invigorating and energising!
4. Prioritise Self-Care
On Blue Monday, take time to do something that makes you feel good. Schedule it into your day—don’t leave it to chance. It could be a relaxing bath, reading a favourite book, taking a nap, or catching up with a friend.
5. Feel Your Emotions
It’s okay to feel sad sometimes. Emotions are part of being human. Instead of pushing sadness away, let yourself feel it fully and allow it to pass naturally. If you need a good cry, let it out—it can be incredibly cathartic.
Remember, It’s Okay Not to Be Okay
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out for support. Just as you’d see a dentist for a toothache, reach out to your GP or mental health services when needed.
Lastly, be kind to yourself. You spend more time with yourself than anyone else, so treat yourself with the same care and compassion you would offer a dear friend.
