Finding Your Groove Again: How Journaling Can Reignite Your Spark

You haven’t lost your light — you’ve just forgotten how to look.

How many times have you felt like you’ve lost your groove? That effortless rhythm in life — the one that made you feel creative, purposeful, and truly yourself — sometimes slips quietly away. Whether you lost it in the chaos of a pandemic, the weight of responsibility, or simply the pace of life, you’re not alone. The good news? That groove is still there, waiting for you to find it again.

The Myth of the Lost Spark

We often imagine our groove as something that disappears — perhaps tucked between the couch cushions or left behind in the bathroom at work during a stressful moment. But more often than not, it’s not lost at all. It’s simply dimmed. Like sunglasses resting on top of our heads or a phone already in our hands, the groove was always there — we just forgot how to see it.

Remembering the Light Within

During the Rituals Writing Workshop, participants are invited to remember who they are — creatives, writers, artists, worthy individuals. Many had internalised the voices that once said, “You’re not that good” or “Your dreams are silly.” But the truth is: their light never went out. It just needed reigniting.

The act of writing — even something as simple as journaling — can spark the flame again. And with it, the groove.

The Groove-Finding Exercise

Step 1: Tell Your Story in 3 Sentences

Reflect on your past and who you are today. Consider the journey that brought you here. This can be raw, humorous, painful, or powerful.

Examples:

📝 “My kids have grown and flown the coop. My dog’s spending more time at the neighbour’s. My bed is empty.”

📝 “I’ve found sobriety, but now I’m exhausted. These regrets are hard to live with. And I hate them equally.”

This simple yet profound prompt encourages honest reflection — and often, quiet tears and deep breakthroughs.

Step 2: Choose a Prompt to Explore Further

From that three-sentence story, choose one of the following to expand into a 20–30-minute journaling session:

  • “And right then and there, everything I knew changed.”

  • “I was just a kid, but…”

  • “It was the greatest day of my life, one I thought would never end, and I couldn’t stop smiling when…”

  • “That wasn’t supposed to be how it ended.”

  • “It was a shock to discover that…”

  • “I took a long breath, and knew everything needed to be different.”

This is where the groove begins to return — a sway in your soul, a tap of your emotional toes.

Step 3: Try These Prompts to Go Deeper

When you’re ready to go further, try these next:

  • “Just because things could’ve been different, it doesn’t mean they could’ve been better.”

  • “No one believes me when I tell them I’m…”

  • Write a letter to your imagination. Start it with: “Dear Imagination…”

Why This Matters

Journaling allows us to reclaim our voice. To tell our truth. It helps us shift the narrative we may have long believed. And sometimes, it leads to healing — even if just for 10 minutes in the morning.

Participants have cried, laughed, and returned after class to share how their light feels brighter. Some found direction. Others found peace. That’s the quiet magic of writing. That’s the beginning of finding your groove again.

You’re not broken. You’re not lost. You’re just waiting to be heard — by you. Journaling may seem like a small act, but it can open the door to self-discovery, healing, and the return of your groove.
