Reigniting Passion in Long-Term Relationships

Old relationships can sometimes stagnate.

The truth is that a long-term relationship offering comfort and familiarity is usually incompatible with passion, which often thrives on novelty and a bit of challenge. And yet, we humans are curious creatures—we long for both: the security of the known and the thrill of the new. As the country song wisely puts it, “How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away?”

Some of the most passionate relationships include periods of separation—such as when one partner travels frequently or serves in the military. These relationships come with real challenges, but reunions can spark intense passion, making time together even more meaningful.
