In Honour of Easter: The Healing Power of Kindness

Kindness is more than an action—it’s a way of being. At its core, kindness involves a spirit of helpfulness, generosity, and consideration, all offered without expectation. Especially during times of reflection like Easter, it’s the perfect opportunity to turn inward and outward with acts of grace.

Think of kindness not as something you do occasionally, but as a practice you embody daily. It’s free, powerful, and deeply healing—for both the giver and the receiver.
Kindness Is Good for the Body
Science shows that kindness is a natural antidote to stress. It improves self-esteem, boosts empathy and compassion, and enhances mood. It lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels—the hormones associated with anxiety and tension.
Regularly offering kindness creates a sense of connection and belonging, reduces feelings of isolation, and even supports longer life spans. Better still? Kindness is contagious. When we show up with warmth and generosity, others are inspired to do the same.
Kindness Is Good for the Mind
Acts of kindness increase serotonin and dopamine in the brain—those feel-good chemicals that trigger your brain’s reward centres. Even endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, are released when we give with love.
In moments of anxiety or emotional distress, focusing on how you can show kindness helps shift attention from internal turmoil to external impact. It grounds you. It soothes you. And it reconnects you with the beauty of being human.
Be Kind to Yourself
Kindness isn’t just for others. You deserve it too.
Pay attention to the way you speak to yourself. Most of us engage in self-talk we would never direct at a friend or neighbour. I like to call this the Good Neighbour Policy: If you wouldn’t say it to your neighbour, don’t say it to yourself.
Start by practicing gratitude. Encourage yourself the way you’d support someone you love. Break the cycle of harsh inner criticism by planting seeds of compassion in your inner world.
Start Your Kindness Journey
Every morning, ask yourself: “How am I going to practice kindness today?”
I often invite clients to make a habit of noting small acts of kindness throughout the day—towards others and towards themselves. It shifts focus and rewires the brain to seek the good. Remember, where focus goes, energy flows.
A young client once asked if I wanted to “get on the ARK.” When I asked what that meant, they replied, “Acts of Random Kindness.” What a beautiful idea. Are you ready to step aboard?
Final Thought
Start small. Be gentle. Whether it’s for your community, your family, your environment—or your own heart—kindness heals. Let it begin with you.
“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”
— Dalai Lama.
