In the search for a romantic partner, it’s natural to make mistakes and encounter unhealthy relationships. The longing for true love can sometimes lead us to ignore red flags and tolerate problematic behaviour. However, recognising and addressing these patterns is a vital step toward self-discovery and personal growth.

The Allure of New Love Is there anything more exhilarating than the beginning of a romantic relationship? The thrills, the promise of adventure, and the sense of hope can feel transformative. Unfortunately, in the quest for love, many of us endure relationships that leave us feeling ashamed, remorseful, or humiliated.
The hope of being cherished can blind us to the signs of an unhealthy dynamic. We may even prioritise someone else’s needs over our own, believing things will improve. This is a common yet painful learning curve.
A Personal Reflection Recently, I revisited an old journal from a past relationship. While I initially hoped to relive happy memories, I was instead reminded of the sadness and criticism I endured. This stark revelation was a turning point, showing me how much I had settled for less than I deserved.
Why Do We Stay in Unhealthy Relationships? Many of us bring unmet childhood needs into our adult relationships, seeking a partner to "heal" old wounds. However, no relationship can fulfil every need. The journey to finding a healthy relationship begins with developing a healthy relationship with yourself.
Recognising the Signs Unhealthy relationships often evoke recurring negative emotions, such as:
Shame: This painful emotion can lead to self-doubt and depression. If your partner repeatedly shames you despite your objections, it’s a red flag.
Remorse: Feeling regret over decisions made under pressure can haunt you, causing anxiety and self-blame.
Humiliation: Public shaming by a partner, such as embarrassing you in front of others, is a clear indication of an unhealthy dynamic.
Breaking the Cycle If you feel stuck, reaching out for help is crucial. Confide in trusted friends or family, seek support groups, or consult a mental health professional. Acknowledging your worth and taking steps toward freedom is empowering—it’s a step toward a healthier, happier you.
