Happiness is something we all strive toward, alongside health, success, and meaningful connections. Yet despite its importance, many people find happiness surprisingly difficult to sustain. Its fleeting nature and the pressures of modern life can make the pursuit feel overwhelming.

In this article, we explore what happiness really is, why chasing it often makes it harder to find, and six simple steps you can take to cultivate a deeper, more enduring sense of wellbeing.
What Is Happiness?
Happiness is a mental and emotional state in which we experience positive or pleasant feelings. Many people believe happiness must feel like intense joy or excitement — a euphoric high that dramatically lifts the spirit. But happiness has many layers. It can be as subtle as a quiet sense of ease or as powerful as overwhelming delight.
When we expect happiness to feel dramatic or extraordinary, we overlook the lighter, more frequent forms it takes in daily life. For most people, happiness begins with contentment.
What Is Contentment?
Contentment is a state of inner satisfaction with your present moment. It arises when you feel grounded, safe, and at ease with yourself, your surroundings, and your daily experiences.
Simple moments — a warm drink, a small accomplishment, a peaceful pause in your day — can help you reconnect with contentment. Practising this regularly makes happiness more accessible and sustainable.
The next time you take a break or complete a task, give yourself a minute to feel into your body and mind, and acknowledge the goodness that exists right now.
How to Find Happiness Within Yourself
Below are six core steps I often recommend to clients seeking greater happiness and emotional balance. With each step, the goal is to gently shift your mindset and habits toward a more grounded, inward-focused sense of wellbeing.
1. Stop Chasing Happiness
Many people treat happiness as something that must be earned through achievements. This mindset makes happiness conditional — a distant reward rather than a natural emotion you can access daily.
Instead of chasing the next milestone, allow happiness to meet you in small moments. Let it be simple. Let it be ordinary. Let it be now.
2. Remove Your Internal Barriers to Happiness
When you attach happiness to external goals, you may unintentionally create mental blocks:
“I’ll be happy when…”
“I can’t be happy until…”
This external focus can cause stress, pressure, and disappointment.
Try turning inward and noticing what already brings you joy. Consider who supports you, what activities energise you, and which moments consistently lift your mood. Schedule these moments regularly and give yourself permission to prioritise them.
3. Practice Looking Inwards
Inner awareness is the foundation of long-term wellbeing. Start checking in with yourself daily:
How am I really feeling?
What do I need right now — emotionally, physically, or spiritually?
If you notice stress, incorporate a stress-management tool. If you sense exhaustion, create a self-care plan. If you feel disconnected, allow time to reconnect with yourself in quiet, grounding ways. This practice strengthens emotional resilience and self-understanding.
4. Build Your Self-Esteem
Once you begin observing your emotional patterns, you can also identify areas that need support or healing. Low self-esteem often acts as a barrier to happiness. A powerful approach to improving it is this:
“Treat yourself as you would treat a valued friend — with honesty, compassion, and encouragement.”
This shift helps you set kinder expectations, recognise your strengths, admit your vulnerabilities without shame, and seek help when needed. If you work for yourself, this is especially vital. Become the boss you always wished you had — supportive, patient, and fair.
5. Be Present
Mindfulness and presence help you notice the small joys that often go unnoticed. Being present allows you to pause the mental noise, feel grounded, connect to your surroundings, and experience more frequent, meaningful moments of happiness.
Even a few minutes of mindful breathing a day can transform how you experience life.
6. Take Time to Appreciate Yourself
Gratitude isn’t only for external blessings — it’s also for you. Reflect regularly on your growth, your accomplishments, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the experiences that shaped you.
If you’re self-employed, freelance, or entrepreneurial, reflection is especially powerful. It’s easy to focus on the next step and forget how far you’ve already come. Appreciation reconnects you with your strengths and the happiness found in personal progress.
Happiness isn’t a distant peak to be reached — it’s a daily practice nurtured through awareness, self-compassion, and intentional living. By focusing on contentment and creating space for joy in ordinary moments, you build a more peaceful, fulfilling emotional foundation.
