Let Go of the What-Ifs: A Compassionate Start to the Week

A common theme that often arises in the therapy room – and perhaps in your own quiet thoughts – is the persistent pull of what-ifs.

The what-ifs of sudden heartbreaks or unexpected events:If only I’d made a different decision. If only I’d seen it coming. If only I could go back and change it.


And then there are the slower what-ifs – the ones where something goes wrong in front of us and we can’t bear to face it… or genuinely can’t see it until it's too late.

Here’s what we gently offer:


We often place a god-like expectation on ourselves — believing we should have known better, done better, seen more clearly. But we’re not all-seeing beings. We’re human.

Imperfect. Emotional. Deeply feeling humans.Doing the best we can with the awareness, resources, and context available to us at the time.


Looping in what-ifs gives us the illusion of control — while quietly robbing us of peace.

So instead, try this gentle shift:

  • Acknowledge the limits of what you could have known

  • Surrender to what has happened

  • (Recite the serenity prayer, if it resonates with you)

  • Above all, speak to yourself with compassion instead of criticism

Replace the harsh internal commentary with something kinder, like:“You did your best. And that’s enough.”

If your week has started with a sense of regret or echoes of doubt, please know: you’re not alone, and you’re not failing.You’re simply human. And that is enough.
