The Gift of Kindness

A Simple Reason to Give What We Can

Kindness is often spoken about as a virtue, yet its true power lies in how quietly and simply it can transform lives. Sometimes, the smallest acts reveal the deepest lessons about compassion, humility, and what it means to give without judgement.

This reflection explores the emotional layers of giving, particularly when we are unsure whether help is deserved, needed, or even appreciated.

A Moment of Discomfort

While circling a block looking for parking, a man standing alone on the footpath caught my attention. He seemed restless, pacing in front of a bank, as though waiting for someone who never arrived.

Later, as I stood at the ATM, a soft voice spoke behind me.

“Can I have two dollars? I need two dollars for the bus.”

At first, I ignored him. Then came a comment tinged with frustration. I still did not respond.

When I turned back towards my car, I saw him clearly. A dishevelled man in his forties, face marked by deep lines and dirt, yet with an unexpected youthfulness in his presence.

He held a cup of coffee.

As I opened my car door, I said no. Firmly. Loudly.

Driving away, unease followed me. Not because of fear, but because something did not sit right within me.

The Assumption We Make

I had given money to people before, though rarely. This time felt different. The coffee troubled me. It looked like a premium coffee. My thinking was simple and rigid.

If he could afford coffee, he did not need my money.

The next day, standing in a drive through queue, I was told the car in front had paid for

my order. I sat quietly, unsettled in a different way.

A lesson was forming.

What Giving Is Really About

As the moment replayed in my mind, I realised how quickly I had judged. Perhaps there was no coffee in that cup. Perhaps it was empty, or filled with water. Perhaps it was simply a vessel for collecting change.

The truth was that I did not know. And more importantly, it did not matter.

Giving is not about evaluating another person’s worthiness. It is about choosing kindness.

We often believe generosity should be logical, measured, and justified. Yet kindness does not operate by rules or conditions. It exists as an expression of who we choose to be.

The Emotional Reward of Giving

Think back to the last time you gave freely. The feeling that followed was likely warm, grounding, and affirming.

Was that feeling because you met a genuine need, or because you acted in alignment with compassion?

Often, the emotional reward comes not from solving a problem, but from expressing humanity.

The woman who paid for my coffee did not know my circumstances. She did not assess my car, my clothes, or my perceived financial stability. She simply chose kindness.

Choosing the Best Within Us

When we give without judgement, we affirm the values we want to live by. We reinforce empathy, humility, and openness.

Kindness is not diminished when it is given freely. It is strengthened.

The lesson was simple and quietly profound.

Give what you can. Even when you are unsure. Especially when you are unsure.

Session Reflection Prompt

If you find yourself struggling with judgement, boundaries, or guilt around giving and receiving, it may be helpful to explore what sits beneath those reactions. Acts of kindness can surface deeper beliefs about worth, trust, and self protection.
