The Art of Self-Love: A Journey Back to Yourself

I know many like me and see a discouraging pattern: those who have it in their nature to love without limits ironically impede the pathways of self-love. The more they love another, the less they are able to love themselves.


After escaping a twenty-year relationship, I discovered how depleted I had become. My energy had been exhausted on another person, leaving me unsure how to rebuild. Then, a stranger’s words on New Year’s Eve shifted my path:

“Have a love affair with yourself.”

From that day, I began to practice the art of self-love — and in doing so, rediscovered the power, beauty, and strength within me.


Nine Ways to Rebuild Self-Love

  1. Forgive yourself Mistakes carry lessons. When we forgive ourselves, we create space for growth instead of dwelling on past regrets.

  2. Put yourself first Sacrifice has value, but not when it becomes your pattern. Reclaim your place by prioritising your ambitions, well-being, and joy.

  3. Say “I love you” Look in the mirror each morning and speak it out loud. Replace criticism with appreciation.

  4. Recognise your strengths Identify your best qualities and showcase them with confidence. When you believe you deserve better, you naturally attract better.

  5. Do something you love daily Take 30 minutes each day for a hobby, craft, or simple pleasure. Nourish your soul.

  6. Cut out negative influences Identify people who drain your energy. Release them to make room for healthier connections.

  7. Release love to yourself Stop saving your love for others. Allow it to flow freely within, free of doubt and insecurity.

  8. Celebrate your worth Honour past accomplishments, big and small. Every triumph is proof of your resilience.

  9. Thrive on creativity Express yourself in the way you dress, decorate, write, or live. Creativity fuels authenticity and joy.
